SR-91 Widening and Bridge Upgrades.

Between 1935 and 1938, a two-lane road, paved with twin slab concrete, was built through Santa Ana Canyon. In 1954, that road was upgraded to a four-lane expressway, as shown in the photo on the right.

Thirty-five years later, Leighton, in association with Kawes & Associates, was awarded a contract for a portion of the Riverside County Transportation Commission's Roadway Widening and Bridge Upgrade project as part of the "Measure A" Program. Leighton's investigation covered approximately 4.0± miles of the 24-mile project, from Serfas Club Drive to the Orange County line on SR-91.




Leighton characterized geotechnical conditions and provided geotechnical design parameters for the construction and widening of five bridge overheads within the median of SR-91, including:

  • Serfas Club Drive Undercrossing.

  • Prado Overhead

  • SR-91 and SR-71 Separation Bridges

  • West Connector Undercrossing

  • West Prado Overhead

To collect required geotechnical data for pavement design, embankment/roadway construction, and bridge upgrading. Leighton performed field investigations involving lane closures. Leighton also identified geologic hazards that impacted the proposed construction; identified and evaluated potential borrow sites; designed flexible and rigid pavement sections; and performed static and seismic analysis of bridge foundations. Five separate foundation reports, prepared to Caltrans standards and specifications, were submitted to the Riverside County Transportation Commission and Caltrans for final approval.
