Location: Malibu, California Client: Pepperdine University Construction Cost: $100,000,000 Total Acres: 830 Situated immediately north of Pacific Coast Highway adjacent to the city of Malibu, Pepperdine’s 825-acre campus occupies an imposing hillside site with spectacular views of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is located only a few miles north of the Malibu Coast fault just offshore. Coupled with steep slopes and extensive prehistoric landslides, local seismic activity has required extra mitigation measures to support the continued campus expansion. Leighton’s services over the past 25 years have included services during design and construction of the Seaver College Student Housing complex, the Odell S. McConnell School of Law, the Fine Arts Center, faculty and student housing buildings, numerous athletic facilities and the Payson Library Plaza. As lead geotechnical consultant to Pepperdine University, Leighton has supported the development and expansion of the campus for 25 years. Our investigative services have included geologic studies within the Santa Monica Mountains for land use planning, engineering and geotechnical consulting for buildings and their appurtenances. These studies have investigated faults, landslides, ground water, natural and man-made slope stability, foundation recommendations for construction of single and multi-story buildings and recreational facilities. Observation and testing services have included compacted fills, deep foundations, rigid and flexible retaining walls, utilities and streets. For the preparation of the University’s Long Range Development Plan, we provided a geologic review of active, potentially active and inactive faults on and in the vicinity of the campus.
